this just happened.

backstory first.

eliza had a pair of elephant jammies when she was a toddler. they looked like this...

(doesn't everyone have breakfast with baby Jesus?!)

i had completely forgotten about them because they were in a suitcase of clothes she outgrew from when we visited the states while living in korea.

fast forward 3 years and she got another pair of elephant jammies. slightly different. then along came hattie and the desire to match her sister. she was outgrowing the pair she owned, but one day at 'once upon a child' we found a brand new pair in hattie's size. so eliza has been squeezing into her 3t just so she can match.
a few weeks ago i found the original pair. now hattie has two elephant jammies, slightly different. eliza has one.

here lately she has been asking every night "which jammies does hattie have?"

(they really only have one exact set, but she usually will be satisfied with similar monkeys, polka dots, whatever.)

last night they both wore the matching elephants.

eliza never changed out of hers. so when i got hattie dressed i grabbed the other elephant pair (the ones from the night before were in the hamper in eliza's room) thinking i could just trick eliza.

well, then she insisted she change jammies for the night. she tossed hers in the hamper too.

then came the question "which jammies does hattie have?"

knowing she was going to be mad i cringed when i said "elephants."

"i need to wear my elephants! i will wear them again!"

after an argument "you just took them off, find a new pair!" and a "fine, but i'm not going to help you" (great mom!) she went to the hamper and pulled them out.

meanwhile she is also throwing a fit (love 4 year olds!) because hattie is currently infatuated with opening and closing doors, and is opening and closing the door to eliza's room. i am in the playroom, eliza and hattie are in eliza's room. so it was extra frustrating because every time hattie did it, eliza couldn't see me. i was just laughing (again great mom!)

i am continuing to remind eliza that she needs to get her jammies on and she keeps getting distracted by hattie.

then hattie closed the door all the way and eliza lost it.

this is what i heard on the other side of the door...

"i'm stuck! i can't stand up! i can't get up! my jammies! mama! i can't! help! i can't get up! the door is closed! my leg!"

after laughing a bit, i stood up to see what was the matter. i tried to help her get her foot in, and then i looked at her arms. the sleeves were up to her elbows.

yep, that's what happens when a 4 year olds tries to squeeze into a 12month blanket sleeper!

sidenote - why did she not pick the pair that was on top?

opening day.

of deer season.

i first posted this on fb.

hattie, the baby formerly known as fawn, is team deer!

and then i had to make this. it just begged me to.
and then i peeked in on her and she just happened to be sleeping like this. so an instagram was in order...

"...and please keep all the fawns safe...and their mamas...and daddies too." #hattieprays #fawn

i just love her. kids are fun.

good luck hunters! stay safe. wish james was with you, but he has an upstairs to finish so this fawn and her sister can move out of our bedroom.

is it tomorrow today?

it's one of the most annoying questions eliza asks.

also related...

"who is coming here today?"

"where are we going today?"

"which house are we going to today?"

"are nana and papa coming today?"

"are all my friends coming today?"

so, to curb that, i had an idea.

make a calendar for her, and use magnets to fill the days.

obviously kids calendars are nothing new, but i wanted it to be more personalized.

more visual.

so i made these little polaroid magnets.

a pic of her and hattie outside the library, near delia's brick (at church) deandra and reese (since i watch them twice a week, and most important, daddy's school schedule.

i'm sure i'll be making more as we go on, and adding holiday stickers or what not, but at least we have a start.

the button marks the day, and now i can just say "check your calendar!"

she is still in disbelief that when we lived in korea there were many days in a row that we didn't have someone come over, or go anywhere.

hey? it's my introvert side! i miss those days...sometimes!

nine months of hattie!

and we are having so much fun that i am slacking on this. :)

okay, a lot of fun, mostly chasing her around.

things she likes...
still me.
eliza, for the most part!
her tongue. holding it, sticking it straight down, curling it up to her top lip, blowing raspberries.
flapping and clapping.
being vocal.
being outside.
the ergo.
her happy apple.
eliza's toys.

i know it should have been eliza that made me really feel like a mother, since she was my first born and all. or delia, since i learned how deep a mother's love can go. but man, this hattie, she really makes me feel like a mama. she needs me...a lot. eliza does to of course, but even when she was a nursing bean, she would flip flop between me and james. hattie just wants me...all.the.time. it's exhausting, but also rewarding. i love hearing her little "mom. mom. ma. mom." even if they aren't with full meaning, just hearing that sound is so sweet. the way she nurses, and her eyes flutter, and her hand grabs her ear, or pulls her hair, or plays with my necklace. the way she looks at me. the way she follows me all over the house. it's crazy, but i love it. she is mine. i am her mama.

this month she grew a couple teeth. ate some more food. really started crawling. cruising all over. getting better at sleeping in the crib. still being spoiled in the night and sleeping next to me. i just can't resist. she is in our room, it's easier, i know it won't be like this forever. her and eliza are getting to be more fun together. eliza has said a few different times that she can't wait for hattie to grow bigger. for a variety of reasons. they are sweet together! hattie is still a big cheese. and now she has added a ridiculous nose crinkle, head tilted back, and showing off her two bottom teeth. goofball.
keep filling our lives with joy sister bear!

it's fun to do interviews every once in awhile. i was bored at lunch the other day, and decided i needed to capture life right now. see how eliza is at random...

and oh how random she is. password is jmrock2013

eliza's interview. from michele rockhill on Vimeo.

after that she requested that i interview hattie. eliza just loves when i make hattie talk, but lately she has taken over hattie's voice. it's hilariously high pitched.

password is the same.

and no, hattie does not eat chips. even if eliza insists she can have them...if i steam them!

p.s. ignore the kiwi seeds all over hattie. she is digging food lately!

saturday morning adventure.

would you like an adventure now, or would you like to have your tea first. - peter pan
nature hike for this one. had to wear her "abenture" hat!
along for the ride.

i can see it.

eliza has been complaining of monsters lately.

the funny thing is she usually can't hide her smile when she comes out to tell me that she thinks there is one in our room.

it's pretty cute, but can get annoying quickly.

thankfully, so far she is satisfied with "monster spray"

this morning james and i had quite a laugh. when he got up to get ready for church it was still pretty dark out.

she had crawled into bed with us at some point.

when she woke up and she exclaimed "i can't see! i can't see, mama!"

at first i said "open your eyes!" then realized she was talking about how dark it was "you look black mama! i can't see!"

after that we stayed in bed for awhile. james was in the bathroom, and the light from there was making a shadow of our overhead light on the wall.

she said "heeeey! who is that upside person up there?"

it was hilarious because it was so casual. totally normal to have an upside down person on the wall.

the ring around the light was shadowed also and she went on...

"he just has line ears."

this 4 year old thing is pretty trying, but also pretty awesome!

today eliza took one of those mardi gras bead necklaces and placed it around my neck.

then she pulled on it and stuck her head through it.

we were thisclose and bonking heads.

giggles followed and she said "mama! we are togedder!"

i wrapped my tired arms around her back. dipped her down. brushed her hair away with my face. smothered her with triple kisses.

more giggles.

"deandra! look! me and mama! we are togedder!"

i held her close (because she had no other choice, i still would have though...if she let me)

looked at her and said "together forever?"

giggles. "maaamaaa. togedder!"

"together forever?"

"togedder...for a little while."

"for a little while."

and this mama's heart dropped a little.

and i got a glimpse into how my ma felt when she 1-2-3-4 times watched her babies hop on the bus on their first day of school. and 1-2-3-4 watched them drive away in their car. and 1-2-3-4 moved them in at purdue.

and i understood. as much as a mama of a 4 year old can.

these days won't be forever.

oh, but for now, i will be togedder with my giggly bean.

a few of my favorite moments together...

eight months of hattie!

and we are having fun! even if she did not want to get her picture taken.

things she likes...
pulling up to things.
being outside.
being close to me.
being able to see me.
touching me. ha! see a pattern?
chewing on her tongue.

another month of hattie bear. she is the sweetest thing! mostly happy. still with a ridiculously large smile. just mild mannered and a joy. but oh can she flip it! it doesn't happen a whole lot, but she has triggers. mainly if i walk away or put her down. she is a sensitive one. especially to noise. papa is too loud for her sometimes! she has been exploring the house a lot. swimming all over and checking things out. she is very interested in maggs. he is not so thrilled with that! eliza is learning what to keep off the floor! this month both girls got sick so there were extra tears, extra naps, extra snuggles. we also celebrated both of her sister's birthdays. which meant she had two helpings of pancakes! she mostly just wants to nurse, not too interested in food yet, but once in awhile she will go to town on something. maybe this month she will enjoy it more! i really don't mind though, she has always been a great nurser. i enjoy stealing her away for a few moments and snuggling in bed away from all distractions. it's hard for her not to watch eliza!
love pulling out eliza's old clothes, and finding some of my favorite comes cooler weather...and jeans and cardigans!

our fancy cowgirl turned four!

somehow we have a 4 year old. 4 years ago she came rushing into our lives, and the world would shine brighter, with those eyes, that smile, and that ridiculous personality. oh eliza june! you are a blessing.

eliza had been talking about her birthday for about 6 months. she told everyone, and invited them all to her "fancy dancy" birthday party.
a few weeks before the party, the day after nana bought the first fancy item...she changed her mind. she wanted a cowgirl party.
since james was going to be gone for her actual birthday, i decided to let her have a fancy party with her little friends, and then we would have a cowgirl party for family when james got back.

but then hattie got croup...and was exposed to the chicken pox, and at the risk of infecting more people we had to postpone her fancy party.

i felt so bad, but eliza wasn't too upset. still young enough to just be happy with a few of her favorite people, ice cream, balloons, and some presents.

of course we started the morning off with birthday pancakes. her favorite color is purple, but they turned out more gray...she didn't seem to mind! neither did hattie!
she got to open one present that morning.

then we had a little 4 year photo shoot while waiting for nana and papa to get there. dressed her up in her fancy shoes and crown.

i am not big on characters, so i went with more of a subtle fancy nancy theme. inspired by. if you are familiar with the books you might catch them. (the shoes, the crown, the ice cream sundae bar)
made these lace crowns as part of the party favors. thanks to pinterest for the idea! i'll post the other party favors when we have our fancy playdate.
how are you 4? my little bean!

nana and papa came with balloons, so of course we had to get some pics with those. then aunt whit, enola, deandra and reese came (they all had croup already) and we celebrated the 4 year old!
cousins and best friends! 7 weeks apart.

back inside for dinner and the ice cream sundae bar. thanks nana for making delicious chicken noodle soup!
aunt whit made this carrier for eliza. i'm always hauling hattie in the ergo, so now she gets to carry dandra!
she kept talking about how nana was going to buy her boots. she also insisted she needed a lasso. i wish i would have gotten a video of her opening the boots. she couldn't put them on fast enough, then she stood up and let out the longest "yeeeeeeeeehaw!"

i don't really know where this obsession started, but it's pretty cute!

papa took them outside to demonstrate the art of lassoing. eliza got maggs, and i'm sure he was thinking "oh great...this will be fun."
our little cowgirl!

later that night, she started getting sick. by saturday (the day of her cowgirl party) she was miserable. it was so sad. we warned everyone, and some opted to keep their kids away (i don't blame them!) but we still made the most of it. james was here, and we wanted to celebrate with him!

eliza hasn't been sick too often, and now that she's older, it was a lot harder this time. the coughing really seemed to bother her, and she just wanted to lay down. she hung in there for awhile, but as the party went on she just needed snuggles. she also had no voice! so when she saw the bike from grannie it was another "wish i was video taping" moment. she clasped her hands together up near her chest and whispered as loud as she could "a new bike!" so sweet.

we had cowboy food, decorated sheriff badges, rode on our old wonder horse, and the new see saw james built. (another pinterest score!) she randomly asked for one a few weeks back, and i found some plans.

all in all it was a fun time. wish she would have been feeling better, and wish all her friends and family could have been there, but she enjoyed it, and so did we!
decorated with a bunch of stuff i found around the house that morning. the cowgirl was mine, and nana sent her the cowboy after finding him on ebay. we named them hank and alice.
dressed dandra up in my american girl cowgirl outfit. and of course hattie had to wear one of her bandana bibs!
labor of love...and she was too sick she didn't even want a piece! i was mostly excited that i figured out how to keep the layer flat.
sad eyes, with the shirt aunt whitney made. eliza's favorite things...mermaids, cowgirls, dressing up, crafts, and flying kites!
balance bike from grannie.
ringing the bell. she was too sick to want to ride that much that day, but is starting to get the hang of it!
snuggles with daddy under her new blanket.
one of us is tired from studying greek, one is sick, and one was so tired from a long week she forgot to put on make up...this is us.

but we have a 4 year old!

and she is one of the coolest, sweetest, funniest, loving girls i know.

june bug,
we have been through so much in your short life. we have taken you across oceans and back again. you were the reason i got out of bed after losing your sister. you have been by my side almost every single day for 4 years. some days are hard, but then you win me over by something you say, something you do, a look you give, a kiss, a hug, an "i love you mama." or "you are beautiful" you are the best big sister. daddy and i are blessed that God gave you us. that we get to be your parents. it is such a joy!
